Awesome Phoenix Area Hikes

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Are you bored with walking around the neighborhood or hiking the same crowded trail? Are you looking to break out of your regular routine and discover new places and experiences? If so, then here’s some great news! A never ending world of outdoor enjoyment is just outside your front door. Let me tell you about one of the most under-appreciated, best kept secrets in Arizona. Drum roll please. I’m talking about the vast network of trails found in our very own Maricopa County Regional Park System.

We live in the west valley and we find ourselves drawn to three of these wonderful county parks. They are the Estrella Mountain, Lake Pleasant and White Tanks Regional Parks. Here’s what we love about them.

At the Estrella Mountain Regional Park, we absolutely love the Rainbow East hike. We’ve done this hike alone and we have also done this hike with an interpretive park ranger. The plant life diversity and stunning views make this special. While the hike is about 7 miles or so, it is easy and well worth the three hours.

Next, we cannot spend enough time at Lake Pleasant. What a jewel in the desert! There are dozens of hikes and a seemingly unlimited amount of trails that range from easy to moderately difficult. There are too many great trails to pick a favorite. And of course there’s the water and all the sporting opportunities that it offers. But our favorite thing to do at the lake is attend the Stargazing for Everyone event. You’ll get expert guidance and advise as you look through a number of telescopes at an unbelievable evening sky. This is perfect for families with children.

Our favorite park of all is the White Tanks Regional Park and it is an unlikely favorite since there is very little water and much of the park is quite rugged. The reason we adore this park so much is because we rarely see anyone else when we’re hiking. Our favorite trail is the Goat Camp trail which quickly gains altitude and quickly separates us from all of our daily routines and stresses. If you’re looking for a challenge, you might try hiking up to the antennae array. It’s worth it.

The Maricopa County Regional Parks, are right outside your front door and they’re waiting for you! The entrance fee into each of these parks is $5. This fee helps to keep the parks in great shape and helps to keep many high-impact visitors away. Be sure to ALWAYS have enough water with you and ALWAYS tell someone where you are going and when you plan to return.

A tradition we have in our household is to visit each of the nine Maricopa County Regional Parks every year. These visits are some of the best times we share as a family. Make a point to get to one of our Regional Parks in the near future - you won’t regret it. Get Outdoors!

Leviathan’s Master

By: David M. Quinn

Published By: iUniverse

ISBN: 978-1-4401-5535-2

Sometimes good things come in small packages. That’s the case with Leviathan’s Master, by David M. Quinn. It’s not much over 100 pages long, and that’s including the bibliography, but like a short John Steinbeck or Hemingway book - the length doesn’t matter - it’s the quality and rich narrative of it that counts. Leviathan’s Master is the fictional account of what happened to the author’s relative, Captain George W. Dow. He was the uncle of the author’s grandfather, and was the captain of the world’s largest sailing ship, the seven-masted Thomas W. Lawson, on the ship’s fateful and storm-plagued voyage towards London. Much of the account is based on Dow’s own words and recollections, so his telling of the wreck of the ship seems to speak to the heart. The many black-and-white photos throughout the book of Captain Dow; Captain Cook, who attempted to sway Dow into abandoning the ship sooner; the area where the Thomas W. Lawson sank; and cabins of the ship itself, also add a nice touch, and are the proverbial icing on the cake.

The story is told mostly as a first-person, first-hand narrative by Captain George W. Dow to people around him as he recuperates on St. Agnes Island from injuries he suffered in the wreck. He’s nursed back to health by Charlotte Hicks, the wife of Israel Hicks. Israel and several of his relatives were members of the “Royal National Lifeboat Institution in whose service the men of St. Agnes are frequently volunteered,” as another Hicks, Freddie Church Hicks, relates to Captain Dow later in the book.Israel, Freddie, and other men were the ones who went out in lifeboats to look for any survivors, and they rescued Dow and the ship’s engineer, Mr. Edward Rowe, from a rocky, jagged piece tiny island called Hellsweather Carn.

The way David M. Quinn constructs the book is largely to have Captain Dow relate details of his life and the events leading up to and including the shipwreck through other people asking him questions, and getting him to tell them what happened. For instance, as he recuperates in bed from a broken wrist and ribs, Charlotte is busy cleaning his room, “her arms fully laden with the implements of the war on dust and dirt.” Dow starts talking to her about his wife, Jenny, how they met, their children, and how his going away to sea put a big strain on their marriage.

Then, in Chapter Four, Captain Dow has a new arrival to tell his story to - a man whose name is Francis Dagenham, and is “a correspondent from the Times of London.” He wants to do a piece in the paper about “the circumstances of your voyage…and its tragic end.” Dow is reluctant at first to talk to the reporter, but when Dagenham offers him some of his whiskey he takes out of his valise, Captain Dow becomes more at ease and relaxed and cooperates with answering Dagenham’s questions. The author uses the device of having Dow relate the tale through the questions of others very effectively, and expresses a lot of information in a very efficient manner by writing Leviathan’s Master this way.

You can probably guess that the most exciting and tragic part of the book is when Captain Dow describes the three back-to-back storms he and his crew faced that led up to the anchor chains snapping on the Thomas W. Lawson, and trying to survive in the icy waters of the ocean while he could see and hear men dying all around him. Also, reading about how Captain Dow can’t help but feel guilty, as he was the ship’s captain, and how he handled these feelings was interesting to read.

If you like to read fascinating true-life accounts of survival in the face of all odds, then Leviathan’s Master is a book you’ll love to read. Quinn’s first work of historical fiction was entitled It May Be Forever: An Irish Rebel on the American Frontier, and was about the life of another relative of his, his “paternal great-great-uncle, Michael Quinn.” It’s also a book well worth checking out. Leviathan’s Master was a Best Books Award Finalist. One can only hope that Quinn has more intriguing relatives to write about, and can do so as skillfully and suspensefully as he did with Leviathan’s Master. I’m looking forward to reading more from this talented author in the future.

Top 3 Reasons TV Fatherhood is Awesome

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If the modern world has taught us anything at all, it’s that between the internet, cable TV and older neighbors, kids will learn everything you don’t want them to know. If your child has been watching the Discovery Channel before going to sleep, don’t surprised if “vulva” somehow makes it into your 10-year-old’s vocabulary - and don’t think for a minute that parental controls on Google images are enough to keep him from doing a little extra research.

But now, cable TV is targeting the grown-ups with NBC’s new show, Parenthood, which is set to air on Tuesday, March 2. The show enters the lives of four sets of parents. While advertised as a “dramedy,” the show probably offers more laughs and less drama than that experienced by a real-life father. In fact, actual fatherhood often makes the TV imitation seem like the greatest gift a dad could ask for - aside from a really awesome remote control. Here are the top three reasons fatherhood is better on TV than in real life.

1. You get a freaking theme song. You show me an overworked dad, I’ll show you a man who’s deserving of a jaunty jingle during which he can smile and wave like a well-rested human being who is unstressed and easily meeting all his basic needs for survival.

2. It only lasts an hour each week! In real life, once that baby is born, the cameras are rolling. If only you could exchange your fatherhood for sports, news, late night idle chat and Cinemax after dark for six nights a week.

3. Re-runs. Teaching your kids to ride a bike? Explaining the bird and bees? Real fathers only get one shot. TV dads can try again and again, every night on UPN and TBS.

Making the Most of Your Awesome Tattoo Ideas

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Tattoo inspiration can come from anything, at any time. You might be sipping a cappuccino and enjoying some free Wi-Fi at the local Starbucks when somebody’s crazy graphic tee sparks your interest. You could become captivated by a lush landscape scene while vacationing in Hawaii, or find yourself exceedingly intrigued by the ethereal beauty of a delicate geisha woman when traveling the streets of Japan. A cheesy horror movie might get your creative juices flowing, and re-reading a familiar book or personal journal may send your tattoo thoughts spinning into overdrive. There are a billion and one sources of inspiration out there. Just look around.

No matter what tattoo idea you may wish to implement and make reality, one thing is for certain: The finished product needs to look great. Not just “OK” or “good,” but great. (We’re talking about a lifelong commitment to a piece of art, here.) Now, that might seem like a given, and it might seem like a piece of cake for anyone to achieve, but the unfortunate fact is that it’s not. Millions of Americans are going about their daily lives unsatisfied, with mediocre - or worse, god-awful - tattoos that don’t quite capture (or worse, completely mangle) the ideas they’d originally envisioned. If you’re wondering how to prevent this type of unsightly mishap from occurring in your own life, read on.

The size and location of your tattoo are incredibly important elements in maximizing the attractiveness of your finished artwork. Detailed pieces require more space, and very detailed pieces require a lot more space. Avoid downsizing an intricate tattoo piece whenever possible. If you’re truly committed to inking a detailed image, ask your tattoo artist’s opinion on the size and placement. Visualize and contemplate things for a moment, and then try to go with the flow. An experienced tattoo artist knows where and at what scale your artwork will look best, especially in relation to his own talents, abilities and limitations. Trust his judgment in regard to these issues.

Because placing both your trust and your precious skin in the hands of some strange tattoo artist can often be nerve-wracking and worrisome, performing a bit of pre-ink research is ideal. You’ll want to identify the tattoo shops in your area and determine which ones are reputable establishments known for producing quality work. Have a thorough look through artist portfolios online and in person, noting strengths and weaknesses, and consider the way that those strengths and weaknesses might translate into your piece. If you’re in the market for a unicorn tattoo, find an artist with impressive fantasy works in his portfolio; if you’re searching high and low for the ultimate pinup girl tattoo, pinpoint a local tattooist whose many satisfied customers can attest to the beauty of his pinup tattoos. Do your homework.

Once you’ve chosen an appropriate artist and scheduled your appointment, be bold. Be open and honest about what you’re looking for, and don’t be afraid to speak your mind. The tattoo shop is no place for timidity, unless you intend to allow others’ ideas and opinions to influence your designs. You’ll need to explain yourself as clearly as possible to the person doing the drawing, be specific, and be completely sure. It’s perfectly fine if your tattoo artist (or the shop’s apprentice) ends up having to sketch a couple of similar images several times. This happens on a regular basis with all kinds of customers and, after all, your tattoo IS going to be a permanent fixture (that’s pretty darned important). Don’t feel bad about being choosy. In fact, insist upon getting your way.

Remember these few tattoo tips and you’ll be able to effectively side-step the most common ink blunders in today’s tattooed world. Good luck, and happy tattooing!

Some Awesome Reasons to Own an All Weather Motorcycle Jacket

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are some great reasons for you to own an all weather motorcycle jacket. In fact, you may want to purchase a motorcycle jacket even if you don’t have a motorcycle! As you’ll learn shortly, there are many benefits to owning such a jacket whether or not you intend to use it riding on a motorcycle down the highway.

Generally speaking, motorcycle cold weather clothing provides great protection from the elements. The motorcycle jacket gives excellent protection from cold weather and windy conditions. Jackets can also be treated with special substances to make them water repellent. So you don’t have to worry about ruining your new jacket even if there’s rainy weather outside. If you want a great looking garment that keeps you warm, heated motorcycle clothing is hard to beat.

Of course, the practical use of all weather motorcycle jackets is really just a beginning. These motorcycle jackets look great, and many people like the style even if they don’t plan to own a motorcycle. Many jackets are designed with a number of pockets for storing your possessions, which makes them very useful as well as stylish. A motorcycle jacket can make you feel youthful and adventurous even if you don’t climb onto a Harley Davidson!

Many adults, both men and women, like these jackets because they add a bit of mystique (probably because of the anti-establishment sentiment going back to the 1950s). Men and women of all ages, from the teenager to those beyond middle age, have made the motorcycle jacket popular. Few jackets have the appeal of a quality motorcycle jacket, and they make a great combination with a pair of jeans which so many people tend to wear already.

Aside from the fashion statement you would make by purchasing such a jacket, it is also possible that you would one day purchase a motorcycle. If you do decide to go this route, your stylish jacket will be waiting for you. Maybe a friend of yours already has a motorcycle and has invited you on previous occasions to join the ride. Well, now you have the opportunity to do so without sticking out like a sore thumb. Maybe you can attend a fifties style diner and reminisce about the good old days (even if you weren’t around then). I’m sure you’ll find the right occasion to make use of your all weather motorcycle jacket.

These are just a few awesome reasons to own such a motorcycle. Click here to find an all weather motorcycle jacket or visit us at http://allweathermotorcyclejacket.blogspot.com

My Awesome Blind Date

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I would usually refuse whenever a friend would offer to fix me up on a blind date. However, there was one occasion when I decided to give in when a friend of mine told me that she had the perfect guy for me and wanted to fix me up on a blind date. It would be a double date, with my friend and her boyfriend.

I contemplated backing out several times, but I finally agreed to meet the three of them at a local restaurant. However, I was incredibly nervous and convinced that this guy would not be my prince charming. I saw- that my friend was waiting for me as I entered the lobby. She told me that the guys were already sitting down at the bar having a drink while waiting for a table.

My friend also told me that my blind date was absolutely perfect for me and is looking forward to meeting me. I was unconvinced that he was perfect for me considering that every guy that I date is always different from the previous one.

I didn’t even know that I had a particular type. My friend informed me that we share the same interests and hobbies and that he was tall, dark and handsome. I just rolled my eyes and let her lead me over to the bar where my blind date was waiting for me.

I was totally captivated from the moment my date stood up to greet me. He was definitely pleasant to look at and he kissed my hand softly when he said hello. We engaged in some small talk after he bought me a drink. I could not believe that my date was so handsome and that I was on a blind date.

My date spoke intelligently and seemed very passionate about life. We barely remembered that our friends were there after talking for a few minutes. He kept my attention for the entire meal and made me laugh.

I was impressed that he had a sense of humor to go along with his brains and good looks. I could tell that he had the type of personality that would challenge me. I knew that my blind date had turned out perfectly by the end of the evening.

That perfect date took place about five years ago. I can’t help but smile when I remember that date and look over at my husband sitting next to me on the couch. My blind date was definitely turned out to be perfect for me.

Apple Blossom Festival - An Awesome Event

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The 2008 Apple Blossom Festival went on as planned despite several threats of rain. People were everywhere for the weekend in Winchester, Virginia on the first weekend of May this year. It is hard to figure the actual attendance because there is no gate to this downtown Winchester event. But there were as many people as there always is at this awesome celebration.

There was a carnival open three days before the actual Apple Fest. Powers Great American Midway was the host carnival. It was located about three miles from downtown the host of the main venue. The Circus provided by the Clyde Beatty - Cole Bros Circus was at the Apple Blossom Mall around two miles from downtown. Both of these extra attractions drew large crowds as well. The rides were always turning at the carnival lot. The people packed in elbow to elbow on Friday and Saturday night at both the Circus and the carnival lots.

The patrons were spending money as always. They just did not support the games for sure. Some of the games workers complained of not getting many players. The people seemed disinterested in the games as a whole. The Water Races and quarter pitches did better than usual. The balloon games did well as normal. But several other games took a huge hit in overall grosses. Some of these games were down over 50% in gross. That is an abnormal decrease in sales for any event in a one year period. It was terrible for the games concessionaires and workers.

It was said that there were a few more games on the streets spots than normal. Some estimated up to 10-12 games were added. There were certainly a bunch of games on the streets. They were covering footage in 5 different blocks. If there were more games in Winchester this year that would account for some of the loss in revenue by the games people. One concessionaire stated that although he did not have more games this year he had twice as much help. So the spot was not as far off for him as most this year.

The food sold as always because people have to eat no matter what. People will often buy a certain food at every event they attend. Well in Winchester it is the apples that are going. Several people enjoyed theirs via candy apples. Man those candy apple vendors had to have made a bundle. They were selling them no matter what.

The Firefighters put on a huge parade every year at the Apple Blossom Fest. The parade is long and has many nice floats. It normally takes 2 hours or longer to run through. The Festival has fireworks on two nights. This display is nice and bright and lasts around 15-20 minutes. There are bands to listen to and many other fun activities at this annual festival.

The first day, Tuesday, at the carnival lot things were slower than normal years. The attendance was down and some blamed it on the weather. It was somewhat chilly that day with a little wind to make matters worse. Wednesday was twice as good and basically back to normal crowd size. Thursday was slightly better and was just a scantling off of the Friday crowd. Saturday was by far the best day for all the vendors locations. Weather the location was on the carnival lot or downtown or at the circus lot. Saturday was the finale and the people came out in droves supporting this long time Apple Festival.

I created the web site http://uscarnys.com
UScarnys.com The web site was first published for use on the internet on February 4, 2008. Already USCarnys.com boasts arguably the best free listing of bonafide fairs and festivals on the internet. USCarnys.com has 48 pages of fairs and festivals which you can find all the pages on the home page in a drop down menu. There is a merchandise page with several vendors, a carnivals page with nearly 80 links to different carnivals web sites, a contact page, an employment page, and the home page to go with the 48 pages of fairs and festivals listings. You will find this site truly informative and a very helpful tool for anyone who does anything in the outdoor amusements. Come check out USCarnys.com now!

Awesome Halloween Superhero Costumes and Masks

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Anyone who has even a passing interest in movies and television surely has noticed the incredible rise in popularity of superhero films. Why are superheroes popular? Part of the reason is they symbolize the eternal struggle of good versus evil. Also, superheroes embody a number of traits that many find admirable. Then, there are those who have fond memories of heroes from their childhood. This perpetually stimulates their interest in these heroes. For some, it’s just the fact that superheroes are downright cool that makes them appealing. So, it is no surprise that superhero movies are popular and should be even less surprising that superhero Halloween masks are perennial favorites. And, yes, there are a huge number of superhero masks and costumes to choose from.

The main producers of comic characters are Marvel and DC. Needless to say, they have spawned some excellent Halloween masks and costumes…

Without a doubt, Marvel Comics significantly change the face of comic books and superheroes with a radical approach to changing superhero clichés. Marvel created some of the most memorable original characters in history including Spiderman, the Incredible Hulk, and the Fantastic Four. How great were these characters? Well, not only do their books still sell tremendously to this day they have also been featured in some the most successful film franchises in history. So, if you show up to a party dressed up as a top Marvel character such as Captain America, you can’t help but look great. These classic Marvel characters are greatly loved and that’s why they make fantastic Halloween masks and costumes.

DC Comics have been around since the 1930’s and have spawned three of the most popular heroes in all of pop culture: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. While many of DC’s characters are no longer at the current popularity level of Marvel’s characters, certain DC heroes still remain iconic. So, you really can’t go wrong wearing a Batman costume or Halloween masks of one of his enemies such as The Joker. Then again, you can even wear the costume of one of DC’s cool “B Grade” heroes such as Green Arrow or Green Lantern. They look quite stunning as well.

While comic books are definitely the source of a number of unique and original super heroes, many amazing heroes experience their origin in another medium. In the days before television, radio was the primary entertainment medium. During the golden age of radio, a number of amazing heroes were born. Two of the most popular were the Green Hornet and the Lone Ranger. (Lone Ranger Halloween masks never go out of style) To this day, both of these heroes remain incredibly popular as Halloween costume choices. Then, there are other classic heroes whose popularity is owed to the film industry. Flash Gordon may have started as a weekly newspaper strip, but it was his appearance in old movie serials which cemented his popularity forever.

Really, there are no limits to the number of popular superhero costumes. As such, they always make a safe and fun choice for Halloween masks.
