The New Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are Good book for first learning about birth order - Elizabeth A. Kissner - Wisconsin, USA
I bought this book because I wanted to learn about why my sisters and I are so different. I found the book very informative and easy to read. I still wanted to learn more so bought another book but found it too technical and less helpful than this book. I definitely recommend this book for someone who is just starting to get informed on birth order.
Interesting and compelling, but I think there is a better author on the subject. - marshallh7 - Missouri
There has been a lot written on birth order dynamics by many different authors. It is a fascinating subject and every book or magazine article I find on it is compelling. This book, like others on the subject, is a fun read with insights that will blow you away. You take the theories with a grain of salt though, because there are so many variables in life, so many different facets of personality development that must be considered–birth order effect is just one facet and certainly does not tell the whole story.

I think some of the best information on the subject of birth order, possibly more specific, more reasonable, more practical, is in the 2002 book: “The Birth Order Effect: How to Better Understand Yourself and Others” by Clifford E. Isaacson and Kris Radish. I don’t meant to disrepect Dr. Leman’s writing on the subject, but feel a need to direct people toward Isaacson as a little more down to earth and more practical. JMHO. He is very specific about the five birth order personality traits, but also realistic about serious limitations in application of them. Because I read Isaacson first, it could be an effect of primacy that I favor his theories and presentation, but take a look at Isaacson’s book and read reviews to decide between the two, or I guess buying both, as I did, would be another solution.
Disappointed - Nicole - Oakland, CA United States
I had high hopes for this book. From everyone’s reviews, it seemed like a fun and interesting read. It wasn’t. Sure, there are interesting facts and funny stories about birth order, but it seems like every other paragraph is either about God (which, at times, can start to sound preachy), or about the author himself (how smart he is) and his flawless family (wife, kids, sisters, brothers). I wish the author spent more time talking about actual facts and statistics regarding birth order instead of constantly talking about how, as little kids, his older sister would invite him to tea parties, how selfless she is, or how his son will one day design futuristic rides for Disney World. You get the feeling the author thinks really highly of himself and his family. It gets annoying and gets in the way of any factual information he might be trying to convey.

Making Children Mind: Without Losing Yours

Making Children Mind: Without Losing Yours Excellent Book!! A MUST for all parents - -
Dr Leman is right on target. It is easy reading, but not at all a light topic. All parents should read this book. I find myself wanting to give it to parents I see in the store and on the street. I tell all my friends about it and about Dr Leman. Overall, it is an excellent Christine based guide for parents.
: As the title indicates, Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours is a book with a friendly, lighthearted approach. Author Kevin Leman (The New Birth Order Book) speaks directly from his experiences as a father of five and a practicing psychologist. While you won’t find specific studies or statistics here, you will find straightforward, practical suggestions that often get right to the heart of troubling situations.

Leman’s technique, which he refers to as “reality discipline” is based on a particular passage from the Bible, and his book is liberally sprinkled with his religious beliefs. These references will make this book a particular favorite for some readers; his stance that parents’ authority comes directly from God is a fundamental principle of his text, and some parents may prefer a less evangelistic approach. That said, it’s hard to disagree with suggestions such as “train yourself to be a good listener” and “give your children direct eye contact.” Nearly every suggestion is coupled with a real-life example of the behavior in discussion, making for an easy read, and every chapter ends with questions labeled “to review and apply” as well as a short section of concepts to put into practice. The section dealing with divorce suggests you make a list of the chapter’s suggestions you find difficult and create a plan to implement them. Leman assumes that anyone reading this book can find the time to create such plans themselves, and doesn’t provide his readers with any step-by-step charts. If you’re not up to creating your own action plans, you may prefer a more detailed form of help than this book offers. –Jill Lightner

Have a New Husband by Friday: How to Change His Attitude, Behavior & Communication in 5 Days

Have a New Husband by Friday: How to Change His Attitude, Behavior & Communication in 5 Days It worked in 2 days, by 5 days I saw a huge difference…. - over the hill -
This book is great!!!!!!!!!!

I really was amazed at the change in 5 days.

Old habits can be broken, if one applies what is stated in this book & I saw it with my own eyes!!!

I highly recommend this book to any woman, even if you have a great relationship or marriage we can understand our man much better & how to get things done when we would love to see things done that are often put off.

If you buy this book & you don’t see a huge difference in your man, then you have a Zebra & you simply can not wash the stripes off !!! If you have a zebra you are in for not much change at all so find another without stripes :-)

Audio Version is Annoying - Colinda - Historic Virginia, USA
These comments refer to the audio CD which has a female narrator. And that’s part of the problem. While the woman reading the text to us speaks well and is easy to understand, the fact that she is female changes the meaning of some of Dr. Leman’s statements. Hearing that men are generally rather stupid is more offensive when verbalized by a woman than it would be coming from a man. And Dr. Leman tells us in many ways that husbands are dense creatures, less intelligent, less social, and less sensitive than wives!

Of course, sometimes this may be true but certainly not always. This book is full of generalizations about men and women which (like most generalizations) are not fair. The narrator does not sound like she is kidding either, for she vocalizes without laughing or inserting much emotion.

Another thing that annoys me about the book is that many of the techniques described seem manipulative. This contrasts with advice that Dr. Leman gives in one chapter that you should not manipulate your husband! Yet the book is full of ways to scheme, beguile, and seduce so that the poor dummy does what you want.

In more than one instance, training methods are described so that you can train your husband like you would an animal. He is actually compared to a trained seal, and Dr. Leman even advises that after your husband successfully does what you want you should “throw him a 3-pound fish” by taking him in the bedroom, locking the door, and making love to him. I don’t know which part of this metaphor is more offensive, equating a husband to a trained seal or equating sexual favors to a fish!

I realize that many people love the book and find it helpful. Certainly some of the advice is helpful, and I was pleased to hear the zero-tolerance policy as far as tolerating physical abuse. I think a print copy of the book would be easier to get through because the reader could skim over advice and opinion that does not pertain to her.
: Have a new husband by Friday? Is that even possible? Dr. Kevin Leman says it is. The New York Times bestselling author and self-help guru shows even the most frustrated wife how she can have a new husband by Friday. Leman reminds any wife that if what she’s doing to get better behavior out of her husband isn’t working now, it never will. So it’s time for a change. That means it’s time to change her own patterns of behavior. Here’s how Leman suggests she handle it day to day: Monday: Secrets Revealed: Cracking the Male Code
Yes, you’re different species, but you can work together in harmony. Tuesday: Creatures from Another Planet . . . or Creatures of Habit? To understand men, you have to track ‘em to their den. Wednesday: Think about What You Want to Say, Then Divide It by Ten How to talk so your guy will really listen . . . and listen so your guy will really talk. Thursday: Think of Him as a Seal Waiting for a Three-Pound Fish Why making love to your man is a key to who he is and how satisfied he’ll be, and what’s in it for you. Friday: It Takes a Real Woman to Make a Man Feel like a Real Man How to open your man’s heart, revolutionize your love life, and turn him into the knight you’ve always dreamed of.
