Yup. there was definitely something he left out. Something he doesn’t share up front when you first start to listen to any of his presentations. Then once you hear it, your jaw about drops, and even he says you’re free to leave now since he delivered what it is he had to deliver.
But, let’s back up just a bit. Firstly, who is he? Professionally, as known by some, John Malott is a highly successful Executive Director, and Regional Manager in Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. (PPL). He is a father of four (girls!), husband and resides in Wisconsin. His rise to success in PPL has brought fame and fortune. He travels the country spreading the word about PPL and his story. Huge crowds sell out venues when they know he is coming and there is never enough of his time once he is there. He has become highly sought after not just for his speaking abilities, but for what he trains other Associates on and how to do what he has done.
Once you hear him speak and train you understand why. Why, everything. Why he is successful, professionally and personally. Why crowds gather and why he goes there. Mr. Malott is able to captivate an audience and keep them engaged through wit and humor. His techniques in PPL don’t reinvent the wheel, yet he explains his unique twists. He harps on being system driven rather then people dependent as the key to his success. Most importantly, I think, is that he so openly travels to share his experiences and skill, so that others can truly have what he has. It is that by itself that separates him and other true leaders - the willingness to teach, share and give, without expecting in return. In time, he has received many folds over what he has given.
Personally, its simply amazing how common place he can appear. Not highly extravagant and enjoying what he normally did before his success. One can only imagine though that as his success expands and his opportunities, so too would his lifestyle accordingly, if he so lets it. Catch him off stage and after an event and while always an upstanding person, he too knows how to be a relaxed human and loosen the tie.
But the secret? Near the end of a presentation, he’ll share about his personal life and the secret he shares in his incredibly uneducated and broken down life he led. He shares that he never went to college and didn’t even graduate high school. He suffered a heart attack in his twenties due to drug use, carried a gun and his children couldn’t count on him. Now at about this time most if not everyone in the room is just jaw dropped shocked that the person they just heard so eloquently speak before them led such a life, not long ago.
He is true testament what someone can do to turn their life around when they are in an environment that promotes better things. In PPL they didn’t care where he came from, what he did or what credentials he did or didn’t carry. All that mattered was that he worked hard and meant it. How else can one end up the head of two states and the life he now leads??! Anyone who learns from him walks away a better person because of it.
